SIMs & privacy add-ons

Practical extras that can reduce how much you share. Read the limits first, because no SIM or accessory makes you anonymous.

The honest truth about "secure" SIMs
  • No SIM card makes you anonymous. To connect, your phone identifies itself to the mobile network with the SIM's subscriber identity (IMSI) and the device's IMEI.
  • Your carrier can always see approximate location (from the cell towers you connect to), connection times and data volume. Carriers may retain this data and disclose it under legal process.
  • Regular calls and SMS aren't end-to-end encrypted. Use end-to-end encrypted apps (e.g. Signal) for sensitive conversations.
  • Prepaid isn't automatically anonymous. Many countries legally require ID registration for SIMs, and payment methods can identify you.
  • Per the GrapheneOS FAQ, airplane mode is the only way to stop the cellular network from tracking the device. Wi-Fi can still be used with airplane mode on.

What a well-chosen SIM can do: reduce how much personal data a provider collects, separate your phone number from your daily data use, and limit exposure to SMS-based account attacks.

SIM options

Most popular

Data-only prepaid SIM / eSIM

A data plan without a phone number. Call and message with end-to-end encrypted apps over data instead. This cuts down on SMS spam, SIM-swap risk on your main number, and phone-number-based tracking by apps.

  • Physical nano-SIM or eSIM QR code
  • Prepaid, no contract
  • Coverage and registration rules vary by country

Keep a number

Prepaid voice + data SIM

A standard prepaid line from a mainstream or privacy-minded provider that collects minimal personal information (where local law allows). Useful when you need a phone number for SMS 2FA or contacts.

  • No credit check
  • Use a unique number, separate from your old one, for new accounts
  • SMS remains insecure; prefer app-based 2FA

Travel

Travel / multi-country eSIM

A data-only eSIM for travel. It means you don't have to buy a local SIM with ID at each border, and it keeps your home number's SIM off while abroad if you choose.

  • Data-only
  • Activated via QR code
  • Requires the GrapheneOS "eSIM support" toggle

eSIM vs physical SIM

Setup on GrapheneOSInsert and goEnable Settings → Network & internet → eSIM support (uses Google's proprietary eSIM component; Google Play isn't required)
Move between phonesEasy: swap the cardUsually requires the carrier to issue a new profile
Physical theft/tamperingCard can be removedNothing to remove

Network identificationIdentical. Both identify you to the network in the same way.

Tip from the GrapheneOS usage guide: if you protect an eSIM with a PIN, leave the eSIM support toggle enabled afterward, so you can disable the eSIM from the lock screen if you forget the PIN.

Privacy & security add-ons

Faraday pouch

Blocks radio signals while the phone is inside, so it can't be reached or located over cellular, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Limits: quality varies, and the phone reconnects as soon as you take it out. Airplane mode is free and does much of the same.

$XX Placeholder

Privacy screen protector

Narrows viewing angles to reduce shoulder-surfing. Limits: dims the screen slightly and may affect the under-display fingerprint sensor on some models. Check compatibility.

$XX Placeholder

Hardware security key (FIDO2)

Phishing-resistant two-factor authentication for your important accounts, via NFC or USB-C. Limits: keep a backup key, and not every service supports it.

Rugged case & cable

A protective case and a high-quality USB-C cable (also the best kind for running the GrapheneOS web installer yourself).

1:1 setup session

A 45-minute video call (placeholder length) to walk through profiles, sandboxed Google Play, app choices and backups. We never ask for your PIN, passwords or remote access.

What we don't sell

"Encrypted phones" with secret networks, "untraceable" SIMs, IMSI-catcher "detectors" or other gimmicks. GrapheneOS deliberately avoids these approaches as well, because they create a false sense of security.

USB data blockers are largely unnecessary on GrapheneOS: by default the USB-C port blocks new data connections while the phone is locked, and you can make this stricter in Settings → Security → Exploit protection → USB-C port.
